No Color, No Problem: Black Picture Ideas

The first step when incorporating black framed wall art is to decide whether you want to have a predominantly neutral color palette. Black goes beautifully with other neutral tones, and it is a great addition to a modern home. On the other hand, if your space is funky and full of color, black can ground your space and add a splash of sophistication.

Black Color Schemes: Pro Tips

ElephantStock's interior design expert Elimar Lobo Sáenz explains how to make a black-based monochromatic palette look chic:

“Monochrome doesn’t have to mean boring. If your color palette is composed of mainly neutrals like black and white, you already have a timeless base, full of possibilities. Black will balance any lighter neutrals (like white walls) and give you just enough contrast. Shades of grey can be helpful in giving your interior dimension without the need for color. Consider wood floors and textural details for visual interest that still looks contemporary. Black prints and patterns are the perfect accessory for a cool-toned neutral home.”

The Best Kitchen Framed Pictures

Your kitchen may seem like an unlikely space to benefit from wall art, but it’s a super easy way to upgrade your cooking space!  A classic framed print is ideal for your kitchen because the glass will prevent the print from getting damaged. A canvas is more likely to be negatively affected by smoke or moisture, whereas a framed picture is more resilient. Choose a black framed print that inspires you to cook and spend time in the heart of your home.

Modern Framed Picture Ideas

The color black and contemporary style go hand in hand. Modern art is the perfect way to add a hint of black to your interior in a sophisticated way. Choose a print with an abstract theme for more versatility. Our art director, Tirzah Goodman, has curated a collection of “abstract brushstroke” paintings specifically for the modern designer. There are plenty of black-tinted options that are full of personality without looking overpowering.

Modern Wall Art: Pro Tips

Our resident décor expert Elimar Lobo Sáenz explains the importance of using modern art as a statement piece:

“Nothing transforms a room quite like modern artwork. Modern or abstract wall art represents freedom of expression. This nonlinear style can also work with a wide variety of décor and interior styles. If you’re looking to add a trendy element to your space, modern art will add an intriguing touch without overwhelming your home. If you choose art in a neutral color like black, make sure your art is large enough to act as an accent piece. Plus, don’t be afraid to play with interesting patterns and conceptual designs.”

Framed Picture Size Guide

If you’re trying to decide on the best size framed print for your space, we’ve made your decision super simple! Our Ultimate Wall Art Size Guide is full of handy tips, and we’ve pulled the top excerpts to give you a little preview:

“Your framed print should take up 60% to 75% of the available empty wall space (the portion not covered by moldings or furniture.) The first step is to measure the height and width of the wall. After that, multiply the measurements by both 0.6 and 0.75. As a result, you will get the range of print sizes to suit the size of your wall.

Use this example for reference: If your blank wall is 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide, multiply 9 by 0.6 to get the low end of the ideal height range. Then multiply 9 by 0.75 to get the high end of the ideal height range. Repeat the same calculations for your wall's 5 feet width. The ideal height of the print would be 5.4 feet - 6.75 feet and the ideal width would be 3 feet - 3.75 feet. Voila!”

Choose a vertical or horizontal print depending on your available wall space. A horizonal frame is ideal for hanging above a sofa or credenza. A vertical frame is a great space-saving solution, and it’s also the perfect choice for hallways and smaller walls.

If you need more convincing when it comes to selecting a framed print, we explain the benefits of a framed layout in this excerpt from our article on framed vs unframed art:

“The framed canvas looks like a single panel canvas, but this gallery-wrapped artwork features a third layer, a wooden frame that creates an illusion of floating art. A framed canvas lends a refined touch to your space and impacts the artwork's impression, as a solid black border frame keeps the focus on the artwork.

If you are looking for a large modern artwork or an abstract design, you should choose floater frames to achieve elegance. It makes a great choice if it easily matches and harmonizes with your overall interior theme.”
