Finding a Style That Suits Your Child

If they’re old enough, it’s important to consult your kids when designing their space. You want to choose something that inspires them. Promote creativity and give your children a space they look forward to spending time in. If they aren’t quite old enough to help you choose, go with a print that is educational as well as stylish. Choose a piece of wall art that displays a dynamic world map, or one that celebrates the diverse animal kingdom. Help them learn while they play - it’s the best of both words!

Playroom Wall Art: Pro Tips

ElephantStock's interior design expert Elimar Lobo Sáenz shares her tips for decorating a playroom:

"Kids tend to spend a lot of time on the floor, so consider having a cushy area rug to ensure the floor is a comfy spot for lounging and playing. Also, incorporate low furniture, pouf, ottomans, and floor cushions around make the space feel welcoming for even the smallest family members.

Children can play in the tiniest of spaces, but if you have the room, leave an open area where they can spread out with toys, play a board game, or work on their latest art creation. If your living room is on the petite side, incorporate an ottoman or coffee table that can easily slide out of the way to create an activity-ready space."

Playroom Wall Decorations: Expert Tips

One of the main design considerations of a playroom is safety. Not just for your child, but also for your decor! Framed artwork can be heavy, prompting concerns of falling artwork. Canvas wall art is a good option, but should be hung above where sticky hands can damage the print. Our top pick? Posters! These low-maintenance options lie flat against the wall, far away from prying hands. Plus, they’re much less expensive than traditional artwork. That means if there’s an accident, they can be easily replaced! Low-maintenance and low cost – it doesn’t get better than that! You want your playroom to look nice, but it should also allow for your kids to play without reserve.

Kid-Friendly Color Schemes

A playroom is one of the most liberating spaces to decorate, as the design rules are much more lenient! You can have fun with the color scheme, without worrying about cohesion. Throw out the idea of minimalism and embrace maximalism and excess. Experiment with bright colors and vibrant shades. Looking for gender-neutral color ideas? Check out our article on gender-neutral color schemes.

Playroom Wall Art: Pro Tips

Our expert designer Elimar Lobo Sáenz shares her tips for a gender-neutral color-palette:

"Gender neutral colors and decor have become [increasingly] popular. [For example,] earthy shades of sand and gray, as well as pastel hues. [Consider a] monochromatic space with some splashes of color."

Green Playroom Ideas

Playroom Wall Decor: Sizes

Follow these excerpts from our ultimate wall art size guide to choose the best size canvas for your child’s playroom:

Your wall art should take about 60% to 75% of the available empty wall space, the portion not covered by moldings or furniture. Measure the height and width of the wall. Now, multiply the measurements by both 0.6 and 0.75. As a result, you will get the range of canvas print sizes to suit the space.

Wall art that you want to hang over furniture, such as a fireplace, a bed or a couch, should be between 2/3 and 3/4 of the furniture's width. To measure the ideal art size above your furniture, consider this example: If your couch is 6 feet wide, multiply it by 0.66 and 0.75. You need a canvas between 3.96 feet and 4.5 feet wide to fit impressively above the couch.

Playroom Artwork: Shapes

When selecting the ideal canvas shape for your kids’ playroom, select the layout that matches your design goals:

A Foolproof Classic: The Single-Panel Rectangle or Single-Panel Square

Traditional with a Twist: The Single-Panel Vertical Canvas or the Single-Panel Panoramic Canvas

Balanced but Unique: The Triptych Tri-Panel Canvas or the Symmetrical Five-Panel Canvas

Ultra-Trendy and Full of Personality: The Split Two-Piece Canvas or the Four-Panel “Wave” Canvas

Playful and Eye-Catching: The 7-Piece Hexagonal Canvas Set

Playroom Wall Art: Pro Tips

If you choose a multi-panel layout, follow this tip from our guide on how to hang multi-panel wall art:

“Width: for all layouts, we recommend leaving 1" space between each panel when hung, for the best airy but tied-together look! If the gap is too big or too small, you'd lose the effect of the split canvas.”

Magical, Mythical Wall Decor

Adding magic and mythical wall art to your children's room can ignite their imagination and inspire a sense of wonder. Fantasy-inspired art can transport kids to a world of enchantment and adventure, helping them to develop their creativity and storytelling abilities. From unicorns and dragons to fairies and mermaids, there are countless magical creatures to choose from when it comes to decorating your child's walls.

One way to add magical wall art to your child's room is to incorporate a large piece of wall art. Oversized artwork can transport your child to a magical forest, enchanted castle, or underwater wonderland. Alternatively, a decal featuring their favorite mythical creature can add a touch of whimsy to a plain wall. You can also opt for smaller pieces of art, such as framed illustrations or paintings, which can be easily swapped out as your child's interests and tastes evolve.

Not only can magical wall art spark your child's creativity and imagination, but it can also create a cozy and comforting atmosphere in their room. When choosing art for your child's room, be sure to involve them in the decision-making process, asking for their input on which mythical creatures they love most. By creating a space that reflects your child's interests and passions, you can encourage a love of learning and foster a sense of joy and wonder in their everyday life.

Psst…this is also the perfect opportunity to incorporate Viva Magenta, Pantone’s vibrant color of 2023!
