An Introduction to Vintage Room Inspiration

Curated by our art director, Tirzah Goodman, our “Vibrant Vintage Patterns” collection puts a modern twist on traditional prints. Just because you want to explore the world of vintage décor doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice contemporary style. Splashes of vintage callbacks can actually elevate your current furniture and finishes. A floral print is the perfect way to hint at the past without making your space look dated.

For more expert ways to balance classic and contemporary design, follow this tip from our article that goes in-depth on vintage floral patterns:

“The simplest method to modernize a vintage piece is to start with a contemporary color palette. Choose an art print that showcases a traditional pattern, and surround it with modern hues. Neutrals are the perfect way to close the gap between old and new. Opt for wall art that incorporates shades like grey, beige, and ivory. This will also create the perfect balance between masculine and feminine in your space.”

Vintage Dining Room Trends

Being a communal space, your dining room should look warm and welcoming. This is where vintage décor comes in. Traditional interior design tends to look cozier and more inviting than stark contemporary features. Even Mid-century modern décor was meant to increase practicality and the comfort of your guests. Let your furniture do all the work and choose statement pieces that are also comfortable. Add a vintage centerpiece on your dining table for a look that is both charming and refined.

Stylish Vintage Living Room Décor

Go big with vintage accessories in your living room. Choose a velvet sofa for a tried-and-true traditional look. Velvet will also match the modern pieces in your living space, so it’s a win-win! Keep your furniture low to the ground so your space oozes understated luxury. Don’t forget a plush rug to keep your living room from looking cold.

Defining Your Vintage Style

Because there are so many different periods of vintage décor, it’s important to choose which era best suits your personality. Luckily, there are tons of crossover eras that allow you to incorporate multiple decades into your space. For example, the 80s saw a huge revival in Regency décor, but with lighter, more muted base colors. The 1960s brought back some elements characteristic of the early 1920s as well. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our guide to determining your perfect design era. Here’s an excerpt on the ever-popular Art Deco period to get you started:

“Art Deco saw metallic gold tones and velvet textiles rise in popularity, but the shapes became much more rigid and geometric that the decade before. The warm colors of the Art Nouveau period shifted in favor of more royal, elegant shades like navy, eggplant, and jade. The Art Deco period focused primarily on playing with lines and patterns. The iconic jazz age incorporated sophisticated elements like floor to ceiling curtains and more modern, rectangular chandeliers. Because we’re living in the “20s” all over again, there’s no better time to give your home an Art Deco makeover.”

Vintage Wall Art: Size Guide

If wall art is your vintage-inspired décor of choice, make sure to choose the right measurements to ensure proper proportions in your space. Traditional interiors are defined by their attention to detail, so the dimensions for your wall art should be no exception. Follow these tips from our Ultimate Wall Art Size Guide:

“Your chosen piece of artwork should take up about 60% to 75% of the open, empty wall space. This is defined as the portion not covered by moldings or furniture. The first step is to measure the height and width of the wall. Next, multiply the measurements by both 0.6 and 0.75. As a result, you will get the perfect range of canvas print sizes to suit the space. As an example, if your blank wall is 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide, multiply 9 by 0.6 to get the low end of the ideal height range. Then multiply 9 by 0.75 to get the high end of the ideal height range. Repeat the same steps with your wall's 5 feet width. The ideal height of the canvas would be 5.4 - 6.75 and the width would be 3 feet - 3.75 feet.”

Orange Wall Art

Take a cue from the 1970s and play with joyful shades like orange and yellow. These colors are sure to boost your mood and revitalize your space. Our décor expert Elimar Lobo Sáenz shares her tips for adding a splash of orange:

“As a hint of warmth, orange can breathe life into your interior in the blink of an eye. Keep it classy by incorporating just a touch of orange through subtle accessories like pillows, throws, and other textiles. When it comes to colors to combine with orange, consider bright white and ivory tones. This easy-breezy color combo is a simple way to create a happy, energizing space. Orange and blue are another tried-and-true color combination. You can’t go wrong with these complementary colors.  Surround orange and blue with organic colors like grey, brown, soft yellows, and greens."
